Topping the Billboard R&B charts in 1957, Bill Justis' "Raunchy" is one of the most successful rock & roll instrumental tracks of all time. Having grown up in Memphis, Justis played an integral part in the development of rock music, working with artists on the legendary Sun Record Company, as well as recording music for himself. Justis changed the title when he heard someone enjoying the tune say that it was "raunchy," which meant "messy" or "dirty" in '50s teenage slang. Ernie Freeman covered this. It was a reversal of the usual process as Freeman was black and Justis was white. Freeman's version hit #4 while Justis' hit #2.

Raunchy Bill Justis didn't start with a desire to be a rock and roller, but when he found himself in the same room every day with some of rock's originators, he began to get the hang of it and move in that direction.
